All-Star Extravaganza this weekend

By Todd Fuqua

Seventeen athletes from all six Lincoln County area high schools are gearing up for their final action as high school athletes starting this weekend, as the New Mexico High School Coaches’ Association hosts various all-star contests in Rio Rancho.

Unlike in years past, all but two games are scheduled to be played either at Rio Rancho High, Cleveland High or the Santa Ana Star Center.

The only dates played elsewhere are the 2A/1A North-South volleyball game – featuring Corona graduate Jessica Liebold and held July 25 – and the 2A/1A boys basketball game, with Hondo’s Jordan Brady on the south roster, playing July 28 at 6 p.m. at Eldorado High School.

Everything else happens starting on Friday.

There may be a lot of area athletes, but there aren’t many on any one roster.

Except for small-school football and the 3A/1A softball and baseball games, there is only one area athlete named to each team.

Santino Rojo is the lone Ruidoso Warrior representing the South in the 4A/3A football game, played June 10 at 7 p.m. at Cleveland High, while Jonathan Lewis and Korey King are on the boys and girls 4A/3A basketball squads. The boys game is at 6 p.m. and the girls game at 7:30, both on June 11 at the Santa Ana Star Center.

Hondo’s Alyssa Gomez will also take to the floor at Santa Ana, playing for the South in the 2A/1A girls basketball game, June 10 at 6 p.m.

In small school football, three Carrizozo players – Christian Najar, Joel Torres and Caleb Ventura – and Mescalero’s Quinn Saenz were named to the 2A/Six Man South team. Additionally, Mescalero coach Leonard Velasquez is coaching the South team in the game to be played June 11, 7 p.m. at Rio Rancho High School.

Two Ruidoso Warriors were named to the 4A/3A All South baseball team, Hayden Frierson and OJ Herrera. The three-game series starts June 10 with a 7 p.m. game, and concludes the following day with a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m.

All three games will be played a Rio Rancho High School.

The 4A/1A South softball team has the largest contingent of local athletes, with Cheyenne Marrs, Bryanna Parker and Mary Jane Swanson of Capitan joining Ruidoso’s Taylor Mowdy and Sarah Reynolds.

The series begins with a doubleheader, June 10, at 2 and 8 p.m. Things wrap up Saturday with a single game at noon, all at Cleveland High School.
