Capitan improves in sweep of Cloudcroft

By Todd Fuqua

Three times, Capitan has faced Cloudcroft this volleyball season, and two times in a row now, the Lady Tigers have swept their Otero County counterparts.

Capitan coach Kimberly Stone said the final matchup, a three-game sweep by the Lady Tigers on their home floor on Sept. 27, was her team’s best performance of the three.

“We played better tonight than then,” Stone said in reference to Capitan’s sweep of Cloudcroft in the Capitan Classic last weekend. “Two of the games were close, but it was due to our errors.”

The Lady Tigers (4-6) were still without Dakota Hazen, Lizbeth Quiroz or Megan Traylor, who were unavailable for any matches during the Classic due to injuries.

But Shelby Southerd had a “great game,” according to Stone.

Capitan is at Mesilla Valley tonight, then travels to Fort Sumner for a rematch with the Vixens, five-game winners over the Lady Tigers in the Classic’s fifth-place match.

After that, Tularosa comes to town Oct. 6 for the start of District 4-3A play.

  1. Wondering how the Capitan Classic came out…who won?

    • I know Elida played Mesilla Valley for the Orange bracket championship (basically, first place), but I don’t know who won. Given that matchup, I’d guess Elida. Tatum played (and beat) Magdalena for third place, Capitan swept Cloudcroft for the championship of the Black bracket (fifth place), while Carrizozo beat Fort Sumner for seventh.

  2. Actually fort sumner won the consolation chamionship- beating Carrizozo & Capitan. Cloudcroft & Zozo played for 7/8
