Carrizozo and Mescalero’s volleyball teams met on the court Monday, the fourth match for each team and the second time the squads have faced each other this season.
While Mescalero won the opener in four, on Carrizozo’s home court, it was the Lady Grizzlies who took it in four hard-fought games.
“It was a hard match,” said Carrizozo coach Whitney Whittaker. “We came in knowing how tough Mescalero is, but we’re a different team now.”
Carrizozo (2-2) had gone through a number of lineup changes, including the shift of Janae Willingham to libero.
The road had been bumpy, but it finally paid off against the Lady Chiefs (2-2).
“It seems to work for us now,” Whittaker said. “My eighth graders are pulling in and doing awesome.”
Mescalero is at Hondo tonight, while the Lady Grizzlies won’t be on the court again until this weekend’s Mountain Top Tournament, starting with pool play on Friday at Cloudcroft.
The Lady Chiefs will also be at that tournament, as will Capitan, Cloudcroft, Eunice, Lordsburg, Animas and Mountainair.
Carrizozo is in a pool with Mescalero, Mountainair and Capitan.
“It’s good competition, so we’ll see how well we do,” Whittaker said. “It’s a good tournament, and I’m looking forward to it.”
