It’s a challenge when you’re coaching a team that can’t win.
It can be just as much of a challenge to coach a team that wins almost too easily.
Just ask Carrizozo football coach Dale Jackson, whose Grizzlies defeated Menaul 50-0, Sept. 23, in a game that was over shortly into the second half.
“That’s the issue that we’re going to face, that’s we’ve played three games and really only played just over six quarters,” Jackson said. “Our team is progressing, though. Our offensive line blocking was much improved.”
While there was a lot of Grizzly scoring, Jackson said the big improvement was in defense.
“Our kids were making some hard hits, and there were three or four guys flying to the ball every time,” Jackson said. “
Now 3-0, Carrizozo has had just three games to tune up before starting District 3-eight man play, which kicks off Sept. 30 with a contest at Cloudcroft.
The Bears are 2-2 and eager to get a victory.
“They’re excited to get into district play,” Jackson said. “I’m excited to get district play kicked off, and see how we fare.”
Cloudcroft boasts a very fast running back in Nathan Toddy.
“He’s just fast, and they do some great things to get him out in open space,” Jackson said of Toddy. “They also have a quarterback that can throw and has a decent option game. I’m not saying it’s just Toddy, but he’s fast and you can’t coach speed. That’s what he has.”
