Carrizozo opened its volleyball season in thrilling – if disappointing – fashion on Aug. 30, falling 24-26, 25-19, 25-19, 25-21 to Mescalero.
Scores from the first game indicate the Lady Grizzlies (0-1) are not a team to overlook, even if they are missing a few players right now.
“We had three eighth graders that were playing all the way around and they did phenomenally,” said acting head coach Katherine Pierson. “They played amazing tonight.”
Mescalero (2-0) was led by striking sisters Katelyn and Lauryn Yuzos, as they continue to improve on last year’s finish. They’ll hope to ride that momentum into tonight’s home match against Dexter.
Carrizozo hosts Mountainair tonight at 7 p.m. and will still be missing senior Kristie Gallacher, who was involved with an FFA event on Tuesday.
“I think when we have her (Gallacher), there’s no reason we should lose,” Pierson said. “Once we have her back and work on a couple of rotations, I think we’ll be golden.”
