Carrizozo netters eyeing perfect district record

Two matches in two weeks remain in Carrizozo’s 2016 volleyball regular season, and the Lady Grizzlies are looking at another unbeaten district record.

Carrizozo made the long road trip to the state’s west side over the weekend, defeating Animas in five games on Oct. 14, turning around to get a sweep of Reserve before heading home.

“It’s always good to get that W, and it was a great game,” said Carrizozo coach Whitney Whittaker of her team’s win over Animas. “They were a little tired from the long trip, and the first two games didn’t go our way.

“But they came back and did amazing in the third, fourth and fifth games. They played together and were in sync,” she added. “They didn’t give up and I am so proud of those girls.”

The Reserve match was a rematch of Carrizozo’s three game win two weeks before. The Lady Grizzlies (10-9, 4-0 District 4-1A) were happy just to get it done and head back home.

“The girls were extremely tired, and Reserve is always good competition,” Whittaker said. “It was a very tiring weekend and the girls were ready to come home. They were glad to win in three and get on that bus ride home.”

This Saturday, Oct. 22, Carrizozo heads back west to face Quemado, then ends the regular season with a home match on Oct. 27 against Animas.

“Right now, we’re getting prepared for Quemado, a very tough team,” Whittaker said. “I know they’re looking forward to playing us again, but we’ll have all week to prepare for them.”
