Hondo Eagles earn district win

By Todd Fuqua

After needing a last-second drive to secure victory the week before, Hondo was hoping to have an easier go of it against District 2 opponent Reserve on Oct. 7.

They got the 73-26 victory, but coach Brandon Devine said it was a close one to start.

“It was a back and forth game there to start with,” Devine said. “But we stuck with it and it was a good win for us.”

Hondo (3-3, 1-1 District 2 six-man) at least fulfilled Devine’s wish that his team improve just a little bit more with this game. Having already lost to Vaughn, the Eagles needed a win to build momentum into the next week.

“We came out a bit better,” Devine said. “This is a team that we try to get better and improve every week. This week it showed what we had worked on.”

This is a week that includes a road game against Animas, the leading team in the district and unbeaten at 5-0, according to MaxPreps.

Animas is a team that’s been getting better with each year, and now they look to be the team to beat in the state.

But Devine says not to count his team out.

“It’ll be tough, and we have to go all the way there to play it, and there’s a few things we have to work on,” Devine said. “But I’m confident we can walk out of there with a win if we keep doing the things we’re getting better at.”
