Ruidoso’s girls soccer team was really hoping it could pull off a District 4-4A/1A victory at Moriarty last weekend. Doing so would have strengthened their case for a post-season berth.
But the Lady Pintos proved too tough, winning 2-0.
“We were excited to go there and play them and we thought we could take that match,” said Ruidoso coach Manuel Medrano. “But the Moriarty girls played an awesome game.”
Ruidoso (6-10-1, 1-3 district) came in with some confidence, having won two in a row, including a convincing 2-1 victory over Portales.
When they last faced Moriarty (9-8-1, 3-1) the Lady Warriors fell by the same score, so they knew they had a shot.
But they just didn’t have what it took to defeat the Lady Pintos, and now they need at least one win – maybe two – to earn a spot in the Class 4A/1A playoffs.
But that is a very tall order, considering their next contest is against defending state champion Hope Christian on Oct. 15.
“To be honest, that’s going to be a tough game,” Medrano said. “But we’ll try to do better than the first one.”
By “do better,” Medrano means a better showing than the 5-0 loss in Albuquerque on Sept. 27.
“I’m not saying we’ll just play back on defense the whole game,” Medrano said. “We’ll try to win, but it will be tough.”
The season wraps up Oct. 18 with a road contest at Portales. How that figures into the playoff picture depends on what happens between Ruidoso and Hope Christian.
