RUIDOSO – Things haven’t gone well lately for the Ruidoso soccer programs, but things seem to be turning around.
Both the boys and girls took on Artesia Saturday – the boys on the road and girls at home – and both lost. The Lady Warriors fell 7-0 – a step back from their 5-1 decision at Artesia last month – while Ruidoso dropped a 4-0 decision.
Another shutout – their ninth in their last 10 games – isn’t good news, but they were able to score a goal against Hatch last week, and their defense was just a bit better against the Bulldogs this time around.
As for the girls, coach Manuel Medrano was puzzled as to why his girls seemed nervous coming into the contest after a tie at Hatch.
“We had to go with a different goalie today,” Medrano said. “That was a lot of pressure. After a few goals, the girls got frustrated.”
Things could get much more difficult for the Ruidoso boys on Oct. 4, as they take on a Portales team that lost its first game only last Thursday against Goddard.
However, they’ve tied Hope Christian and needed overtime to beat NMMI.
Portales’ girls are 5-11 heading into the Tuesday contest.
The doubleheader starts with the boys at 4 p.m. at Ruidoso Middle School.
