Carrizozo’s volleyball team continues to storm through its District 4-1A schedule, having yet to lose a match.
Their latest contest, though, was a nailbiter.
After going up two games to none at Quemado on Oct. 21, the Lady Grizzlies needed to fend off a comeback to defeat the Lady Eagles in five games.
“It was tough, because we were missing our setter, Kristie (Gallacher),” said Carrizozo coach Whitney Whittaker, referring to the senior’s FFA obligations. “But my freshman D’anna Willingham came in and did a wonderful job.
“I think we actually needed this, we needed a challenge,” Whittaker added. “I’m glad we got this win, and we’ll be ready for Animas on Thursday.”
Carrizozo (11-9, 5-0) has already sewn up a spot in the Rudy’s Bar-B Cue Class 1A State tournament, the only question is if they can secure a district title.
That’s not as certain, as Animas – the team the Lady Grizzlies face in their regular season finale – is 4-2.
Even with a Lady Panther win, Carrizozo would have the No. 1 seed in the district, but then there’s the tournament has to be played.
“They’re a tough team,” Whittaker said of the Panthers. “We’re just going to keep at it and work hard. As long as I have my full team and everyone’s healthy, I think we’ll do great.”
