CORONA – Boys basketball has never exactly been a marquee sport at Corona.
Numbers has something to do with it, but this year the Cardinals have nine players on the roster, including five upperclassmen.
That’s experience Corona’s not usually used to, but coach Randy Autrey is ready to make use of it.
“The boys are starting off well this year, playing good as a team,” Autrey said. “Their confidence is up a lot compared to last year. The style of basketball I’m trying to get them to play, they’re more comfortable with it.”
Jaime Morales, Bryan and Brandon Huey are the team’s three seniors, with juniors Jim Racher and Conner Cox complimenting them.
Corona didn’t have a stellar season last year, going 4-19. Three of those four wins, however, were over District 3-1A opponents Valley Christian and Lake Arthur.
Valley Christian no longer has a team, and Lake Arthur is usually fairly strong when it comes to boys basketball.
Add in a Vaughn team that boasts a lot of senior leadership, and a Hondo squad that’s been among the best in the state for the last five years, and you can see the Cardinals are looking at a tall mountain to climb.
Of course, Autrey’s holding off on his opinion until he’s seen them play.
“It’s still early in the season. I need to see some basketball,” Autrey said.
