MESCALERO – Capitan’s boys got another win, Dec. 17, winning the seventh-place trophy of the Mescalero Classic with a 52-38 victory over Pine Hill.
While Capitan’s 2-7 record may not be the stuff of legend, Tiger coach Justin Foust said this marks the beginning of something good, particularly with the Christmas break coming up.
Capitan doesn’t play again until Jan. 3, when they play at Carrizozo. By then, Foust hopes to have a number of his kids back on the floor after some football injuries.
“It’s been nice, the guys have have been working hard,” Foust said. “It was rewarding to see the guys start to figure out how we’re looking to play.”
Saturday’s game came after a 72-19 loss to Alamo Navajo in the consolation semifinals, and after Foust took his team back to CHS for another practice session that afternoon.
Judging from just the score, it seems that extra practice has paid dividends.
“I think so, and the guys are starting to understand the system. They’re starting to realize the expectations I have of them aren’t what they’ve been used to,” Foust said. “We’ll have to start playing better defensively, and we saw a lot of improvement there. I’ve got nothing to complain about.”
