Capitan girls outlast Dexter

By Todd Fuqua

For eight straight games, Capitan’s girls basketball team hadn’t won.

In eight District 4-3A games, Capitan hadn’t won.

On Feb. 20, with their season threatening to end, the Lady Tigers didn’t just win at Dexter, they won big, beating the Lady Demons 31-19 in the first round of the district tournament.

With that win, Capitan (12-15) heads to Loving tonight for a 5 p.m. showdown.

Capitan coach John Devine knew stopping Madison Bogle would be a top priority.

“I think she had seven points,” Devine said. “We did a good job on her tonight.”

While the final score may have been overwhelming, it wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Lady Tigers shot ahead. Dexter (11-15) led 5-4 after the first period and 7-6 at halftime.

The game was tied 14-all heading into the final frame.

“It was a neat to be able to coach this game,” Devine said. “The girls really fought and made some free throws. They’re really excited. It was fun to win and I’m overjoyed.”
