Finally, after a season of frustration, the Ruidoso boys basketball team proved it could beat Moriarty.
They did it with a 54-52 victory on the road in the second round of the District 4-4A tournament, Feb. 21 and face Portales tonight in the tournament semifinal.
“We matched up well, and it’s been one of those long journeys,” said Ruidoso coach Billy Page. “I was really pleased with the boys.”
Ruidoso had a good lead at halftime, only to see it evaporate as Moriarty turned on the jets in the third and fourth quarters.
In fact, the Pintos had a slight lead near the end, but turned the ball over.
“We were able to get a shot to tie it up, and things just happened from there,” Page said. “We got ahead, they fouled and we made some free throws at the end.”
With the win, Ruidoso is now 15-13 and should get a berth in the upcoming state playoffs, they just won’t host the first round.
“We really have nothing to lose at this point, going into Portales,” Page said. “We just have to play our game and compete.”
