RIO RANCHO – To say the Lincoln County Regulators were excited about their appearance at the New Mexico State championships was an understatement.
Playing in the 11U AA division, Lincoln County took on Gas Athletics and the Valencia Jaguars, June 9, in pool play, defeating both teams, 9-4 and 12-11.
That puts them in the Championship bracket on Saturday.
“Everyone was hitting and making plays,” said Regulator coach Joey Saiz. “I’ve been telling them to do that if they want to win.”
There was certainly plenty of hitting in their first game against Gas Athletics, but there was also just as much pitching.
After letting Gas get back three runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Regulators came up with good pitching and defensive plays to shut out their opponents in the next two innings to help secure the victory.
Saturday starts bright and early at 8 a.m. with a game against Tiger Baseball, the first round of a double elimination bracket.
A win in that game would pit the Regulators against either the DC Reds or Diamond Kings at 11:50 a.m. A loss would place them in the consolation bracket, playing at 1:45 p.m.
“The kids are pretty stoked and excited,” Saiz said. “If we can continue playing like we have, we should do pretty well.”
