CAPITAN – After 10 losses to start the season, Carrizozo’s volleyball team finally got in the win column, Sept. 23, and in particularly satisfying fashion.
After falling to Gateway Christian in the consolation semifinals that morning, the Grizzlies dropped District 2-1A Reserve in three games, 25-11, 25-19, 25-21 to take seventh place at the Capitan Classic.
“That feels good,” said Carrizozo coach Whiitney Whittaker. “We still have a lot of things to work on, but we’re getting there. In that game they were moving and talking a lot, and that made a difference.”
Carrizozo (1-10) was actually struggling against the Mountaineers to start, as both teams stayed close and couldn’t take advantage of the others’ mistakes.
That is, until Kaitlin Guevara got the serve for Carrizozo with an 11-10 lead.
Twelve serves later, the Grizzlies led 23-11 and started off their match with a convincing win.
“She’s doing awesome, she’s an all-around athlete,” Whittaker said of Guevara. “I’m very proud of her and very proud of the team.”
Reserve made things closer each game after that, but the Grizzlies were always able to get the points they needed to win.
There’s only one more match for Carrizozo before they start district play, a Sept. 26 home match against Hondo.
