Hondo’s volleyball team had a pretty good weekend, earning bracket wins over Socorro’s junior varsity and Lordsburg’s varsity at the Magdalena tournament.
This came after a thrilling five-game win over Mescalero on Sept. 7.
But that victory came with a cost. Blanca Villenueva, Nina Herrera and Kyra Lucero all collided diving for a ball, with Herrera’s knee taking a hit and Villenueva being taken to the hospital in Ruidoso.
Villenueva has been given a clean bill of health since then, but she didn’t make the trip with the team to Magdalena.
As a result, the Eagles didn’t play as well in pool play as coach Denise Montoya might have liked.
“We started off very slow,” Montoya said. “But I could still put a good offense and defense together with what I had.”
Hondo (5-2) hosts San Jon, Sept. 14, then hosts a rematch with Mescalero on Sept. 20.
