Capitan netters ready for district tourney

By Todd Fuqua

Consistency has been an enemy of the Capitan volleyball team this season.

But coach Pam Allen believes her squad has what it takes to make a run in the District 4-3A tournament this week.

“We’ve played a little up and down, but I think the kids have the capability of having a really good district tournament,” Allen said. “As the district stands, it can be determined by which group has it all together on any given night.”

Capitan’s regular season ended with a four-game loss to Eunice, and will play the winner between Eunice and Tularosa on Oct. 31 in the second round of the district tournament.

The Tigers (10-8, 3-4 district) had defeated Eunice earlier in the season, with Capitan earning the higher seed by margin of victory.

In the next round, the winners head to Loving, with the championship at Dexter on Saturday.

“We played Dexter closer than anyone has this season, at Dexter,” Allen said. “We just didn’t have the confidence at that point to push it through. We also played them pretty close at home. We should have a pretty good tournament.”
