CARRIZOZO – In what was a match of pretty much evenly matched teams, Reserve turned out to have the advantage, Oct. 30, in the first round of the District 2-1A volleyball tournament, defeating Carrizozo in five, 25-23, 26-24, 25-22, 10-25, 15-7.

Reserve (4-17) has been the only team the Grizzlies have been able to defeat this season, having won over the Mountaineers both in the Capitan Classic and once during the regular district season in four games.

Like every past match, Monday’s contest was a close one throughout, with the exception of game four.

In that one, the teams were tied at five-all before a kill by Lici Vega gave Carrizozo the serve.

Kaitlyn Guevara took it from there, and rattled off nine straight service points. From there, the Grizzlies cruised to a win.

But whatever momentum they had deserted them in the final frame, as Reserve took a 5-2 lead early and never looked back.

With this match, Carrizozo’s season ends, while Reserve heads to Animas on Nov. 2 for the next round.
