While Carrizozo may have lost big to Gateway Christian, Oct. 20, the fact that the Grizzlies scored 26 points in their 64-26 loss is pretty big, too.
“We really played well, we played hard,” said Carrizozo coach Dale Jackson. “We couldn’t stop their trap. We thought we were ready for it, but they got five touchdowns that were more than 50 or 60 yards.”
Defense seemed to have been the only issue for the Grizzlies (4-3, 1-3 District 3-Eight man). They were fairly successful scoring against the Warriors (3-4, 2-3).
“We felt like we were playing them good, and we sure played them hard,” Jackson said. “We cut down on the penalties, which was nice.
“It was one of those losses that you can handle,” he added.
Still, it was a district loss – all of Carrizozo’s losses have been in district. And they finish the season next week at Mesilla Valley.
“We’ll do our best, but they’re a heck of a team. They’ve only lost one game this year,” Jackson said. “They have a great quarterback who can really throw the ball. He could be in 5A or 6A.
“Hopefully we can get our secondary back in order, if we can play like we did Friday (against Gateway) we should be OK,” Jackson said. “If we can steal a win we can probably bump up in the playoff seedings, but not much.
“We’re probably in that 7 to 9 range,” he added. “But we will be in the playoffs.”
