Nope, this isn’t how Dale Jackson expected things to go at all.
Sure, the Carrizozo Grizzly eight-man football team was small in numbers, but they obviously have talent, despite their heartbreaking loss to Cloudcroft the week before.
But Tatum proved to be that much better, giving Carrizozo a 55-0 shellacking.
“We just came out flat,” Jackson said. “It was the same as last year, when we lost to Cloudcroft the week before.”
Carrizozo (3-2, 0-2 District 3) found themselves outclassed by a Tatum team (3-2, 1-1) that is on its way to regaining past glory.
Jackson said his team did some things well, just not enough.
“We saw people doing good things, just not all at the same time,” Jackson said. “Hopefully we can get it moving in the right direction this week.”
This week is the Grizzlies’ showdown with Mescalero. It’s a game Carrizozo usually wins, and the Chiefs are coming off a 66-16 loss to Cloudcroft – the team that needed a last-minute touchdown to surge ahead of the Grizzlies the week before.
Jackson doesn’t read too much into the Bears’ easy handling of Mescalero.
“In eight man, things can go bad really quick, and that’s what happened to us against Tatum,” Jackson said. “Cloudcroft got on them (Mescalero) early, and I sure it got away from them quick.
“Mescalero is a good-sized team with a good offensive line and lots of players,” Jackson said. “They always run that deception out of the single wing, so it’s something we’ll have to be ready for.”
