MESCALERO – One day after Capitan’s girls fell to Quemado in the semifinals of the Mescalero Holiday Classic, Capitan’s boys dropped a 60-40 decision in the boys third place game.

Capitan (2-2) actually was within striking distance at the end of the first quarter, thanks in part by a Jacob Smith 3-pointer.

But then the Eagles (10-2) opened the second period with a 12-0 run and maintained control the rest of the way.

“I expected more improvement and expected them to know more of what I expected,” said Capitan coach Justin Foust. “I expected more respect between the players, and it wasn’t there tonight.”

Brendan Usery had 10 points to lead Capitan, while Smith, Tanner Lowrance and Domingo Montes had six points each.

AJ Lackey had almost every point for the Eagles, lighting up the scoreboard with 43 points.

“We have some hard-headed guys that want to go as hard as they can and forget the basketball side of it,” Foust said. “We played hard, gave it what we had, it just wasn’t smart. But we’re getting there. We’re making progress and we’re going to keep at it.”
