MESCALERO – Just two days after their season debut loss to Cloudcroft, the Capitan basketball girls opened the Mescalero Holiday Classic with a huge 68-36 victory over Jal, Dec. 14.

It wasn’t just a turnaround from two days before, it was a turnaround from the first half. The teams were tied at 27 at the break.

Coming out from halftime, the Tigers held Jal to just two points in the third quarter, getting numerous scores off of turnovers and steals.

It was chaotic for both teams, but it worked best for Capitan.

“We did a good job of trapping the ball, and we knew that (Jocelyn) Hernandez girl was good for them,” said Capitan coach Sean Wootten. “We knew we had to do a better job defensively in transition on her.”

In all the affray, Jal had two players foul out. That included Hernandez, who left in the third quarter leading her team with 13 points.

Dakota Hazen had 19 points to lead the Tigers, while Dominique Valadez added 16, most of those coming in the second half.

After a 66-53 loss to Quemado in the semifinal round, Capitan will take on Hondo in the third place game.
