Capitan’s softball team is squeezed by two conditions at the beginning of every season.
On one end, the Tigers have to wait until the end of the basketball season before a majority of its team can even take the field just to practice.
At the other end, the District 4-3A field is so large, district play starts very early.
All this has combined to give the Tigers just three games – at the Dexter Lyndsey Callaway Tournament last weekend – before they started district play, March 27, at Mesilla Valley.
Capitan has done well enough – they beat Ruidoso in the seventh place game of the Callaway tournament and swept Mesilla Valley, 16-0 and 14-0.
But Loving is next, March 29, and the Cardinals are still a strong squad even after losing a lot of talent to graduation from last season.
“They’re not as dominant, but still at least second in the state,” said Capitan coach Kenny Espinosa. “We’ve got to beat the rest of the teams, and maybe pull a win or two off of Dexter or Loving to get ranked high.”
